How about having the portrait as we have it now, but when you click the picture you actually see a whole person. I think that would be an easy way to increse the immersion in the game..

Is it just me or are the buttons on the calculator horrible? :S I mean, for me its hard to get a clear overview of the calculator.. its looks messy! Sometimes less is better :P Simple grey buttons would be sufficient :P
